Powers Three Swallow Irish Whiskey

Powers Three Swallow Irish Whiskey

Powers Irish Whiskey has announced the stateside debut of its latest expression: Powers Three Swallow.

Distilled at the Irish Distillers Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland, Powers Three Swallow is made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Three Swallow matures in American bourbon barrels before finishing in aged sherry casks.

On the palate are nutty flavors followed by green apple and citrus notes, the company says, with a touch of cedar wood. There’s spicy sweetness atop, balanced with a hint of sherry notes, leading to a cereal finish with notes of tasted oak.

Powers Three Swallow is available nationwide for a suggested retail price of $47.99 per 750-ml. bottle.

The name is from Powers’ original John’s Lane Distillery, where the Power family coaches were stabled and each sent out with three coachmen. On journeys these men would bring a small flask of Powers whiskey on their rides, with just enough liquid to give each man a good swallow, the company says, but not enough to interfere with his job. In addition, the migration of the Irish Swallow signifies the beginning of the distillation season in Ireland, and Powers has historically used two or three swallows to signify the age, quality and purity of their pot still products.
